It is not by chance that Tel Aviv has become a center for entertainment in Israel: in Tel Aviv and Jaffa we can find rich history, music and dance performances, extensive culinary culture, museums and more. Here is my list of the ten best attractions in Tel Aviv.
Sunset tour in Old Jaffa
Jaffa is the mother of Tel Aviv. Jaffa has a rich history dating back thousands of years. Climb Amdromid Hill, visit Peter’s Church, cross the Bridge of the Zodiac and view the renovated port. If you manage to reach Jaffa at sunset, you will be able to see the sky in pink colors from the observation deck at the top of the hill.
The Carmel Market
Tel Aviv has several central markets. The largest of them is the Carmel market, and the market is full of fruit and vegetable stalls, alongside many stalls of traditional food, chef’s dishes and more. The tours in the Carmel Market are colorful and full of varied flavors. The combination of cultures in Israel creates a rich and special cuisine, and the Carmel Market is an excellent opportunity to taste local foods. Take a look at my culinary tour of the Carmel market.
Tel Aviv Museum of Art
For the art lovers among us, this museum is a must visit in Israel. This is the largest art museum in Israel, with changing exhibitions, art shows and more. This is an opportunity to meet the famous artists in Israel. You should be informed before arriving, sometimes the museum hosts famous artists from around the world and then you have to make a reservation in advance to visit the museum.
The Beach promenade
In Tel Aviv a long promenade is built along the entire length of the beach, connecting Bat Yam to the north of the city. The promenade itself is an experience, especially in the early morning hours, when the residents of the city go for a walk, run, ride or any other sport on the promenade. For sports fans, along the boardwalk there are also several fitness facilities that can be used during non-hot hours.
Visiting the Flea Market
This market is one of the most authentic places in Jaffa. Although the markets have been going through a process in recent years, where the old stalls are slowly disappearing and the place is being replaced by food stalls, chef stalls, restaurants and bars, in this market you can still find second-hand shops, bargains and the like among the restaurants. Don’t miss The Rooftop of Jaffa, a great restaurant for a cocktail at dusk.
A Graffiti Tour
The Florentin neighborhood has won an honorable place in the world thanks to its street art. On a tour of Florentin, you can be impressed by the local works and the works of non-local artists, the influence of everyday life on street art and the beauty and colors of Florentin. On the tour, you can also see the hipster neighborhood of Tel Aviv, and experience its special character. It is recommended to come to Bretonne and eat a savory crepe with the filling of your choice, or to Florentina the kosher restaurant. You can find information about my graffiti tour in Florentin here.
Neve Tzedek
Tel Aviv is probably the most preserved city in Israel. There are hundreds of buildings from the beginning of the 20th century that are considered conservation buildings. One of the most beautiful neighborhoods in this context is the Neve Tzedek neighborhood. Precisely in the heart of Tel Aviv, in a location with a high real estate value, you will not find buildings but low-rise houses that preserve the special character of the city.
The Applied Art Gallery
In Tel Aviv you can find many beautiful galleries: the modern Eden Gallery on Rothschild Street, the Artists’ Quarter in Jaffa and more. In my opinion, one of the special galleries is the Gallery of Applied Art, where Michelson presents works of art in augmented reality. Michelson will also be able to explain quite a bit about the Florentin neighborhood and the gallery’s connection to the street artists.
Culinary Tour at Levinsky Market
For lovers of unique flavors, you can visit the Levinsky market. This market was actually established by residents who arrived at the beginning of the 20th century from the Balkan countries. Here you can find khachapuri, unique spice shops, churchala and Turkish fillings but not only. This market reveals traditional and wonderful tastes, all in the hipster atmosphere of South Tel Aviv. It is recommended to taste Benny’s Gzoz – a glass full of unique juice. You can read more about my culinary tour at Levinski market here.
Surfing Lesson
Surfing in Israel?! Actually yes! Although not every day is suitable for surfing, sometimes there are not bad waves at all in Tel Aviv. The experienced surfers will be able to enjoy a wave that breaks on the rock at Hilton Beach or an extra long wave at the West Coast, while beginners can rent a surfboard or take a lesson at one of the clubs located at Gordon Beach, the West Coast and the Dolphinarium. Please note that water sports on beaches that are not designated for this can result in fines from the lifeguards.
